Tales From the Co-Op: August Exchanges
By Hannah on August 25, 2026
Your library may have strict operating hours, but your website is always open! Many library users can only conduct research after hours or simply prefer to work from the comfort of their home. So, how can you support these patrons when they might not ever walk through your door? The 24/7 Chat Cooperative is a cost-effective solution for extending the library's impact.

This service gives library users access to a network of highly skilled librarians, available to chat during designated hours – up to 24/7! Even patrons who feel uncomfortable asking for help in-person are often more open to the lower stakes of a friendly chat pop-up.
Your patrons will be in good hands too – Springshare has a rigorous quality control process to ensure all chats receive the highest quality of answers. One patron recently commented that it was “even more helpful than I thought possible!” To shine a light on this excellent service, we've gathered a few examples of chat transcripts. All personally identifiable information has been removed, and we've replaced real names with fun pseudonyms.
Curious Queries
We like to think of librarians as superhuman, but their humanity allows them to make connections that AI can't – like understanding the cultural impact of watching a T-Rex come to life on the big screen.

Patrick Patron: I need help with narrowing down an idea for a project, so pretty much turning an idea into a topic, and then finding keywords on the library website to find articles about it.
Louella Librarian: Hi Patrick, what's your idea?
Patrick Patron: My idea is about how dinosaurs were exaggerated and inaccurate in movies, tv shows, books, etc.
Louella Librarian: So how dinosaurs are depicted in movies and how it differs from reality?
Patrick Patron: Yes, I have some keywords I used and found a couple articles but just mainly wanted assistance on a topic, like wording it correctly if that makes sense.
Louella Librarian: How about searching for something like, dinosaur* AND (depiction OR representat* OR portrayal) AND (movies OR film OR media)
Louella Librarian: Here are some articles, can you take a look? *Link removed for privacy*
Patrick Patron: Oh, I found a good one already!
Louella Librarian: Great! Here’s a Google scholar search as well dinosaur* AND (depiction OR representat* OR portrayal)
Louella Librarian: You can check if these are available in your library resources.
Patrick Patron: Thank you so much, do you think you can help me with forming a topic with the idea I had? I’m kinda stuck on that too.
Louella Librarian: Maybe the impact movies had on scientific research and paleontology?
Louella Librarian: You could argue that these movies stimulated study, as they created greater interest, even if the depiction wasn't accurate.
Patrick Patron: Yes, I've done a little bit of research and obviously in the Jurassic Park movies dinosaurs roared a ton, but in real life there's a good chance they never roared at all. I wanted to definitely get into appearance and behavior.
Patrick Patron: So, a good topic would be "The impact movies had on scientific research and paleontology?"
Louella Librarian: Yes, I think it would be, but it's up to you.
Louella Librarian: Or even how greater interest in dinosaurs through movies created greater interest, more research and more accuracy.
Louella Librarian: Take a look at the articles you found and try to discuss these points.
Patrick Patron: Really good ideas, thank you for the help!

Paulina Patron: Hi I’m so sorry I’ve gotten behind on notifications. I am late on some books and noticed there’s a fee. I can return them today. Will the fees be waived when I return them?
Lancelot Librarian: Hi Paulina!
Lancelot Librarian: Here is what I see from the website. *Link to FAQ removed for privacy*
Lancelot Librarian: “We will notify you if you have overdue items. If you don't return the items within 60 days of the due date, we will charge you a replacement cost for the items. If you return items after 60 days, the replacement charge will be removed from your account.”
Paulina Patron: Thank you so much!
Lancelot Librarian: Sure!
Lancelot Librarian: Have a good day and thanks for using the chat service!

Paisley Patron: Hello, I am looking for articles to do a theorist PowerPoint in my Childhood Education Class and my theorist is Gardner, would you be able to assist me?
Luna Librarian: Hi Paisley! I can help you with this. Have you used the library databases before?
Paisley Patron: No, I have not.
Luna Librarian: The search box on your library's home page will search all of the library's resources at once.
Luna Librarian: What kind of information about this theorist does your assignment require?
Paisley Patron: It requires historical, theoretical perspective information.
Luna Librarian: Is there anything in your assignment that tells you what type of sources to use?
Paisley Patron: She stated that I could use our textbook which was optional, but I don't see any information in this textbook. She stated we would use two additional resources outside of the textbook.
Luna Librarian: OK. Good. I would recommend you use the Gale Encyclopedia of Psychology. *Link removed for privacy*
Paisley Patron: You're awesome, thank you so much.
Luna Librarian: You need to find one more, right?
Paisley Patron: Yes please!
Luna Librarian: Here are a bunch of magazine articles that were written about him over the years. I see one of them is an interview, which might be interesting. *Link removed for privacy*
Luna Librarian: But you can just look at a few of them and decide which one will be best for your presentation.
Paisley Patron: Thank you again!
Luna Librarian: You're welcome, Paisley! We're here when you need us!
