Tales From the Co-Op: May Exchanges
By Hannah on May 26, 2026
We're thrilled to bring you the newest chapter of Tales From the Co-Op! Each month we share transcripts from our Chat Co-Op service which provides libraries with 24/7/365 chat coverage. When your library is closed, understaffed, or simply too busy to respond, wouldn't it be nice to have access to a network of MLS-degreed librarians who can answer questions better than any AI chatbot?

Over the years, our Co-Op librarians have answered millions of questions, helping patrons successfully perform research, navigate library resources, and more! The biggest fans of this service are library users. One patron recently commented, “Love love love the 24/7 librarian service. Amazing innovation. Brings the whole library to the student and doesn't limit access to what is available only in one building.”
To showcase the quality of this service, we're giving you a peek at real-life chat transcripts. Because privacy is important to us, we've removed all personally identifiable information and replaced names with fun pseudonyms.

Pearl Patron: Hi, are you good at searching WorldCat? I am looking for CDs of music that are country artists presenting covers of popular songs, and I want the CD release dates to be between 2000 and 2010. Are you able to help me?
Lily Librarian: Hello! Are there specific artists or titles you are trying to search?
Pearl Patron: Nope, just general.
Lily Librarian: Hm, there is not a great way to "browse" in the library search but give me a few minutes to see what I can do.
Lily Librarian: Take a look at this, I have the filters set to Music CD and the date range as 2000 to 2010. The search is for country music AND cover versions: *Link to Library Catalog removed for privacy*
Pearl Patron: Thanks so much! Looking at the link now . . .
Pearl Patron: This is perfect! Many listening hours of pleasure are ahead.
Lily Librarian: Great! Enjoy 😊

Prudence Patron: Is there a cost for printing at the library?
Link Librarian: Hi, I'm Link, a (human) librarian. I can help you. Are you a current student?
Prudence Patron: Yes, I'm a graduate student.
Link Librarian: *Link to FAQ removed for privacy* The cost is 5 cents per page, but you get $40 worth of printing per semester without paying.
Prudence Patron: How do I access the $40 worth of printing?
Prudence Patron: Do I need my student ID for that?
Link Librarian: Yes, you’ll need your Student ID and password; it's also your library card.
Link Librarian: For printing, you sign in with your ID and password, the same sign-in that you use for class pages and school email.
Prudence Patron: Got it! Thank you so much!
Spotlight on Librarian Excellence
We know many patrons – especially students – tend to look for library resources after-hours. It's why the 24-7 Chat Co-Op is so popular! Providing expert assistance in the middle of the night is a huge value-add to patrons with limited availability during the day.

Patricia Patron: Hello, I wanted to find a credible nutrition source related to organic foods and immune health.
Louella Librarian: Hi Patricia! I'm happy to help you with your research strategy to see if there are any studies linking organic food and immune systems.
Louella Librarian: Let's pull up your library site and we can try some searching.
Patricia Patron: Okay, how do I do that?
Louella Librarian: Let's start with your library's main search box
Louella Librarian: And put in this search: ("organic food" OR "organic diet") (immune system OR immunity) and then use the filters on the left for available online
Patricia Patron: Okay.
Patricia Patron: There are a lot of books that are recommended, but I prefer websites. Should I customize my filter?
Louella Librarian: Yes, you can use the filters to limit your source type.
Patricia Patron: Okay.
Louella Librarian: Let me know if you have any other questions about the search interface!
Patricia Patron: I found an interesting article using the database, which I'm planning on doing my assignment with. Thank you so much for helping me so quickly at this time!
Louella Librarian: So happy to help! Chat is here 24/7 so please come back anytime!
