Celebrating Black History Month 2024

In honor of Black History Month, observed in February in the United States and Canada, we're highlighting some incredible LibGuides that celebrate Black voices and stories. This month is dedicated to "paying tribute to the generations of African Americans who struggled with adversity to achieve full citizenship in American society" (blackhistorymonth.gov) and "honour[ing] the legacy of Black people in Canada and their communities" (canada.ca).

From the LibGuides Community

The librarians at Marymount University have created a LibGuide showcasing books, media, and archives celebrating Black History Month. In addition, they've featured local and virtual events, exhibitions, and museums centered on Black history and culture.

For decades, NYPL's Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture has collected comic books and graphic novels showcasing Black characters, Black authors, as well as criticism, commentary, and history. This LibGuide provides an overview and highlights items from their collection.

The Alberta Teachers' Association has compiled this Black History Month LibGuide for teachers. With a range of articles, videos, teaching resources, and much more, this LibGuide supports learning about Black history in Canada throughout February and beyond.

This LibGuide from the University of Arizona looks at the experiences of Black people in the Borderlands, from Baja California, Mexico to Tamaulipas, Mexico. Special Collections librarians and researchers on the Borderlands pulled information from various sources to shine a light on this often-overlooked piece of history.

The Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Libraries share resources, activities, podcasts, books, online exhibits, and more to celebrate the lives and impact of Black artists and creators.

In the July 2020 edition of SpringyNews, guest speaker Twanna Hodge offered guidance on how libraries can build impactful LibGuides that promote anti-racism and inclusivity.
